Calgary will soon have two more sheets of ice as the ground was broken yesterday at South Fish Creek Recreation Centre.
The recreation centre currently has two rinks but is expanding to combat the city’s lack of ice.
“With the two rinks here from the time we opened we’ve always had not enough ice for all of the players within … our area,” said Simone Mersereau, the president of the recreation association.
“We’ve waited a long time for this and we’ve been working hard at it for the last three years.”
As a parent of three hockey players, Anita Turner said she can’t wait for the opening of the new rinks.
“Sometimes you’re driving to High River and to South Fish Creek and sometimes to Indus all in the same day,” said Turner. “It will be a huge relief.”
Calgary Buffalos player Wyatt Petryshen, 15, said he’s looking forward to having a rink closer to home for practising.
“Ice time will be the nice part, just to get on more,” he said.
