Premier Darrell Dexter calls Thursday’s announcement by the federal government of at least $35 billion for a new shipbuilding strategy “very good news.”
“I would go so far as to say (Peter) MacKay should be congratulated for his leadership on this issue,” Dexter told reporters Thursday. “Needless to say we’re pleased … Obviously, we have one of the most successful shipbuilding yards in the country, and any policy that sees to the further development of the Canadian Navy and Coast Guard through a procurement policy which will specifically deal with Canadian yards is a very good piece of news for us.”
The Halifax Shipyard currently employs about 300 people.
