A newly released survey ranking public transit systems has found that Boston’s MBTA is the third best in the U.S.

The survey, conducted by financial information website SmartAsset, considered factors such as time differences between commuting in a car versus public transit and the number of commuters who use a city’s transit system.

Boston, overall, ranked as the third-best system with 34 percent of the population relying on mass transit for their daily commute, totaling 390 million annual riders, WHDH reported on the survey.

The survey found that Boston commuters who ride the T have, on average, a 10-minute longer commute than those who drive, about the same as Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, which finished in the top two spots.

One disheartening finding that makes Boston stand out is that public transit commuters here make 13 percent less than automobile drivers, a higher figure than the other cities in the top five, which averaged a 5 percent difference, according to SmartAsset.

The survey analyzed transit systems in cities with more than 175,000 people.
