New website allows cancer researchers to collaborate

The largest co-operation effort among cancer researchers in the region was launched Wednesday.

The Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute will provide a forum for scientists in Halifax to collaborate on their work. It isn’t a physical building, but a website and monthly seminars for scientists to learn what research is being done in the area.

“We hope that providing membership in the institute will encourage people to look at the other activities going on and to encourage people to work together,” said Mark Bernstein, director or the new institute.

“As the institute develops, we expect also to be providing some assistance with time-consuming (process of getting) a grant.”

Cancer research in Halifax ignited about a decade ago when Beatrice Hunter left $12.5 million to the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation in her will. The money was donated in the memory of her parents: Her father, Owen Cameron, was a doctor in River John in Pictou County.
