New York City police officer shot

A member of the NYPD was shot earlier this afternoon during a scuffle with a man in Harlem, who was also shot and died. Kevin Herlighy, a 21-year veteran of the force, was reportedly chasing the suspect, Michael McBride, who fled into the subway station at St. Nicholas Avenue and West 145th Street.

According to the NYPD, McBride was wanted by police for the shooting of a 21-year-old woman in Queens Monday night, thought to be the daughter of McBride’s girlfriend. The officer was shot in the arm and is now in stable condition, an NYPD spokesman said.

“When Detective Herlihy and the rest of the team searching for Michael McBride confronted him around 145th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue, the suspect fled,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg this evening. “The detective gave chase, and when the suspect reached the subway station the suspect turned and fired, hitting Detective Herlihy in the left arm. Detective Herlihy exchanged fire, and the shooter was killed.”
