New York Fashion Week: Sally LaPointe Fall 2015

For fall, Sally LaPointe was inspired by another strong woman with a singular vision: the late modern-dance choreographer Pina Bausch. “I discovered her about four months ago, and my heart fell to the floor,” says the up-and-coming designer backstage before her show. “She had the ability to shock and inspire.”

LaPointe set out to do the same with her collection, slashing her gray wool skirts up the leg, using printed sequins to give an abstract sheen to leather pieces, or adding sweet peter pan collars to utilitarian military blouses. (Pleated chiffon skirts recalled the elegance of Bausch’s dancers in a more literal way, without resorting to ballet cliches.) The result: cool, confident clothes that modern women will want to wear everywhere, from the executive suite to a night on the town.

Trends: muted colors, pleated ballet skirts, fringe, peter pan collars, oversized envelope clutches

Instaworthy: A fringed embroidered top worn with a cream organza pleated skirt that just danced on the model. Pure elegance.
