New York man adds six inches to his height with $85K surgery

Being shorter than average can often lead to insecurities, but a 37-year-old New York man changed his life with $85,000 worth of surgery to “grow” six inches.

According to ABC News, the New Yorker, who goes by the pen name Apotheosis, traveled to Germany to receive metal rod implants in his legs. He said he was tired of the world looking down on him.

For the procedure, doctors must break the patient’s leg and insert a rod into the bone. The bone is pulled apart at a slow rate of one millimeter a
day. Eventually, muscle tissue, arteries and skin begin to
regenerate around it.

Apotheosis must twist his legs back and forth to extend and change the rod’s height. The surgery is extremely painful and takes three months to complete with demanding and excruciating physical therapy.

Despite the painful process, the surgery is increasingly popular — many other men are having the procedure done. Well known orthopedic surgeon Dr. Dror Paley performed 650 leg-lengthening surgeries last year in Florida.
