New York Times columnist praises Cape Breton’s golf circuit

The No. 1 sports story in the New York Times Monday lauded the golf scene in Cape Breton and was read by millions.

“I think it’s worth potentially a tremendous amount,” said Stacey Pineau, who works in media relations with Golf Nova Scotia and drew up an itinerary for Times golf columnist Bill Pennington when he visited the province for the first time last summer.

“I’m certainly hopeful that we’ll see an increase in inquiries.”

Pineau said Pennington, who writes a column called On Par, contacted her last July to say he would be driving to Nova Scotia to take his two daughters to a camp outside Halifax in August and was interested in checking out some of the province’s courses.

Pennington spent two days in Cape Breton with his wife and son. The first day, he played the Cape Breton Highland Links golf course in Ingonish Beach and recalled in his story having a “10-foot bull moose” watch him hit a shot from about 40 feet away. The second day, he experienced the Bell Bay Golf course in Baddeck, making note of its “finely manicured fairways and devilish, signature closing holes.”

He also visited two mainland courses, the Northumberland Links in Pugwash and the Fox Harb’r Golf Resort and Spa in Wallace.
