It’s been said time and time again that Celtics boss Danny Ainge would have taken Kevin Durant over Greg Oden in the 2007 NBA Draft had Boston landed the No. 1 overall pick in that year’s lottery. Whether or not the story is true we’ll never know, but Ainge has built up enough stock over the years as a non-conventional thinker for there always to be an element of surprise when it comes to the Celtics. It’s why I’m in no way sold that the Celtics are going to take Buddy Hield or Dragan Bender at No. 3 like basically every other mock draft out there suggests.

Cal’s Jaylen Brown is the type of athlete Ainge covets and I believe he has the most upside of any player in the lottery outside of Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram. There were whispers back in January that the Celtics liked Brown but some inconsistent play during his freshman season at Cal hurt Brown’s status as a sure-fire top five pick. Many mocks have him going so far down as No. 8 to Sacramento. If his stock around the league really has slipped that much, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Celtics trade back a couple slots in order to land Brown.

I’ve gone over why I don’t care for Bender at No. 3 for the Celtics but here are my issueswith Hield. While he improved greatly each year in college, he’s probably plateauing soon. He’s 22-years-old now and he doesn’t have nearly the amount of room for growth as a player like Brown has. Other knockson Hield is that he’s a bit undersized(6-foot-5 on a good day) and he completely disappeared in the Final Four (nine points on 4-of-12 shooting in a 95-51 blowout loss to Villanova).
