A blooming marshmallow tops Dominique Ansel’s new hot chocolate

The home of the Cronut, Dominique Ansel Bakery, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this weekend by bringing one of its biggest hits from overseas to the original SoHo shop.

The Blossoming Hot Chocolate, created at Ansel’s bakery in Tokyo, tops housemade hot cocoa with a marshmallow flower. Held together with a thin ring of chocolate that melts when placed inside the cup, the flower “blooms” over the surface — revealing a chocolate bonbon inside. Foodies, alter your proposal plans accordingly.

The hot chocolate will be around all season, but this weekend only there are two other overseas treats to be had in SoHo: Swing by from Nov. 4-6 forOnigiri Ice Cream Sandwichfrom Japan, made with rice soft serve, sweet ume plum jam, puffed rice and a seaweed cone, andBanoffee Paellafrom the newest London shop. Surprise treats, including birthday cake, will be given out all weekend.

The SoHo bakery opened on Nov. 2, 2011, with just two cooks, two baristas and Ansel behind the counter. The Cronut may be its biggest hit, but just look at the timeline above — there are plenty of other reasons to check out the bakery and its sister,Dominique Ansel Kitchen, where the after-hours dessert tastings at its private dining roomU.P.continue to sell out every month.

Its third themed menu debuted this month: Despite its name, Dominique’s Dessert Barbecue will still be a parade of sweet treats (over 10 at least) adapted from traditionally savory dishes like raclette, yakiniku and Korean barbecue.Tickets($55) for next month are already sold out, so mark your calendar for when they go on sale for January on Dec. 1.
