Alex Rodriguez will retire at the conclusion of the 2017 season, he told ESPN Wednesday.

“I won’t play after next year,” the 40-year-old Rodriguez said. “I’ve really enjoyed my time. For me, it is time for me to go home and be dad.”

Rodriguez’s announcement is a tad unconventional given that he is still two full seasons away from hanging it up.

The controversial Yankees slugger has 687 career home runs, which currently has him in fourth place all-time behind Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714). To overtake Bonds he would have to average 37.5 homers over the next two seasons.

A-Rod hit 33 home runs last season in a monster bounce-back campaign.
