The two girls were reportedly home alone when the fire started, the New York Daily News stated, adding that it is unclear if the mother will face any charges in connection to the incident.
Three firefighters and seven others were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, an FDNY spokesperson said to The New York Times.
“I prayed for them all,” resident Antonia Rodriguez said to the Times. “Those kids, even the mom. It’s just a tragedy. As a mother, it’s hard to imagine.”
The building where the fire took place was listed as the most fire-prone in the city in 2013, the Daily News stated, adding that the cause of the blaze remained under investigation.
