Brooklyn Bazaar’s scary new digs are like being in ‘The Shining’

There was no lazing on the beach or barbecuing in the backyard for Belvy Klein and Aaron Broudo over Labor Day weekend. The duo behind Brooklyn Bazaar were busy finishing the fourth incarnation of the late-night market-meets-entertainment mecca, which opens Sept. 9 in Greenpoint.

“We’ve been pretty good at reinventing ourselves,” says Klein. “It’s been a necessity to move to new venues because the real estate market in Brooklyn is insane.”

Opening night will be a massive affair, headlined by Indie rockers Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, but the star of the show might just end up being the new venue. Brooklyn Bazaar 4.0 is housed in the three-story Polonaise Terrace, a beautiful old banquet hall on Greenpoint Avenue. “This is the first time we won’t be in a warehouse all on one floor,” says Klein. “We’ve gone vertical.”

When they first saw it, the opulent hall’s lavish chandeliers and all the decadence of its own time as a special events venue made it easy to imagine it as a retro venue for hip Brooklynites. Sadly, the building’s owners removed the original chandeliers, leaving gaping holes in the ceilings.

“We were disappointed to see them removed; they were awesome. But we replaced them with some that are in keeping with the Art Deco style,” Klein says.

Still in place: floor-to-ceiling mirrors throughout the three levels and original wallpaper and rugs from the 1970s. “It looks a bit like the hotel in ‘The Shining,’” he notes. “The place has got a ‘American Horror Story’ vibe, and we’ve done our best to embrace that aesthetic.”

While Brooklyn Bazaar is still free to enter, concerts in the upstairs hall will now be ticketed. The market’s giant game room also made the move, with a basement full of ping pong, blacklight mini golf, an arcade and more. Around 30 vendors will sell vintage wares and curiosities Friday through Sunday.

Karaoke rooms are available to rent, and for liquid courage there are four bars. A ground-floor restaurant, Brooklyn Star, will serve Southern comfort fare by chef Joaquin Baca. Attendees will also be glad to find one big improvement over the previous Brooklyn Bazaar venues: proper bathrooms inside the building.

More events are in the works, starting with a Tuesday night film series curated by Nitehawk Cinema, kicking off next week with Roman Polanski’s psychological thriller “Knife in the Water.”

If that’s what they’re kicking off with, just wait until Halloween.
