The NYPD is investigating the fatal shooting of 16-year-old girl who was killed Tuesday night as she took care of her young cousin in Brooklyn.

On May 31 police responded to the call of one shot fired inside a sixth floor apartment on Brooklyn Avenue, according to authorities.

Upon entering the apartment, cops found Shemel Mercurius semi-conscious with multiple gunshot wounds to her body, police said.

Emergency personnel took the teen to Kings County Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

According to the New York Daily News, Mercurius — who moved to Brooklyn from Guyana four years ago — had been babysitting her 3-year-old cousin during the time of the shooting.

The teen shared the apartment with her aunt and cousin, the Daily News reported, and had allegedly been with her boyfriend while watching the toddler.

Police are currently looking for Mercurius’ boyfriend to question in regards to the incident, according to the Daily News.
