Council speaker supports marijuana legalization

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viveritosaid Thursday that she supports legalization of marijuana.

Mark-Viverito was speaking at a press conference on unrelated city council bills when she answered a question on marijuana.

The speaker, who represents East Harlem and the South Bronx, also said she had smoked marijuana in the past, and that she believes legalization should be approached “thoughtfully.”

Earlier this week, Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton announced a change in enforcement for low level marijuana possession, but both said they do not support marijuana legalization
