Driver charged in crash that killed Staten Island teen: NYPD

Police have arrested a Staten Island man they say fled a traffic crash that left a 19-year-old woman dead and another teen in critical condition.

Alize Jorge, 19, was found unconscious and unresponsive in the backseat of Mitsubishi sedan at 10:45 p.m. on Sunday night. She was later pronounced dead at Staten Island University North Hospital.

An 18-year-old, found unconscious on the pavement near the crash, was taken to the same hospital in critical condition.

Hasim Smith, 22, was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. A preliminary investigation found the driver was speeding north on Richmond Avenue when he tried to run a red light, swerved to avoid a vehicle making a left turn and hit a post in the intersection.

The Daily News reported the crash sent Jorge flying into the car’s hatchback, and the impact threw the unidentified 18-year-old victim on to the pavement.

DNAInfo reported earlier this year that a 22-year-old named Hasim Smith was arrested after allegedly fleeing from police officers, hitting a utility pole, and admitting to driving with a suspended license.
