For a few seconds, Brandon Marshall thought he was being traded by Jets

It was certainly a stressful day for Brandon Marshall as the New York Jets wide receiver sweated through an emotional trade deadline. Rumors had been swirling for weeks that Marshall, the biggest chip on a disappointing Jets roster, might be trade bait.

But even at 3-5, it appears that the Jets and Marshall are eyeing things from a long-term perspective. Marshall will appear on Tuesday night on CBS Sports Network’s ‘We Need to Talk’ and the topic of trade rumors was brought up.

“Literally three minutes ago, I got a call from someone within the (Jets) organization. My assistant called and said, ‘Hey B, this guy called you and said it’s an emergency.’ We were just in the green room,” Marshall said on the CBS Sports Network show. “I put my head down and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. I’m about to get traded.’ He said, ‘I just want to let you know. Don’t listen to the rumors. We’re not shopping you.’ I was about to cry (before the call). I literally was about to cry. I was like, ‘How am I going to go on this show and maintain myself?’ But, I’m still a Jet.”

And apparently he didn’t cry…at least not much.

The Jets wide receiver, who has a tremendous future in broadcasting, also weighed in on Cam Newton. In recent weeks the Carolina Panthers quarterback has been vocal about the amount of hits he’s been taking in the pocket as well as what he thinks is targeting by opposing players.

Newton himself is a physical quarterback and frequently exposes himself to hits in the pocket by taking off down the field and running. He’s been criticized for this playing style but it did take the Panthers to the Super Bowl last year.

“All quarterbacks are whiners to me. So I just put him in the same boat as all the rest of them. Cam does take a lot of shots. He takes more shots than a lot of the other quarterbacks do around the league,” Marshall said. “They can probably do something about that. But the way his style of play is he is going to take big hits. The only way he can avoid taking those hits is if he stays and becomes a pocket passer.”
