Inside Look: 10 New York City penthouses under $10 million

Living in New York City at times can feel like being in the center of the world, but when it comes to local real estate, it’s often about living at the top.

Penthouse ownership has always been a sign of making it in this competitive city. But owning a penthouse doesn’t mean paying eight figures —even in today’s sky-high market.

A simple definition of penthouse means “a structure or dwelling on the roof or top floor of a building.” For renters or buyers, however, that often means luxury and space – and in New York that still isn’t cheap.

Data compiled by StreetEasy shows that in New York City there are currently 312 penthouses for sale under $10 million. The majority — 232 — are in Manhattan, followed by Brooklyn with 57, Queens with 19, Bronx with four and Staten Island with zero.

Manhattan also had the highest median asking price for those listings, but it was still at the low end – $3,822,500. The rest of the boroughs were all below the city average of $2,995,00. Brooklyn had an average sales price of $1,868,900 and Queens was $1,450,000. In the Bronx, penthouses averaged $762,500.
