Mitch Trubisky looking more like the pick for Jets in 2017 NFL Draft

Just days after New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles stated that there would be a wide-open competition for his team’s starting quarterback job, sources told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that the team will hold a private workout for North Carolina prospect Mitch Trubisky.

The Jets hold the No. 6 pick in this year’s NFL draft and have been linked to Trubisky for quite some time. Mehta reported in December that, “the word in NFL circles is that Woody Johnson’s star-crossed franchise has the hots for…Trubisky.”

Searching for answers at the position, the Jets attempted to add a veteran presence for Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg by bringing on 37-year-old Josh McCown. However the consensus is that none of them can do much to turn New York’s fortunes around.

Trubisky put together a solid junior season at North Carolina in 2016 within a pro-style offense. In 13 games, he completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,784 yards, 30 touchdowns and just six interceptions.

Despite playing just one full season at Chapel Hill, Trubisky ranks sixth on the program’s all-time passing list.

As one of the top quarterbacks available in the draft along with Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, it is very possible that Trubisky could fall to the Jets at No. 6.

The Cleveland Browns look poised to take Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett with the first-overall pick while the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears could also go defense whether it be LSU safety Jamal Adams or Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas.

At Nos. 4 and 5, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans need to build around their franchise quarterbacks in Blake Bortles and Marcus Mariota, leaving Trubisky available for the Jets.
