Mom, boyfriend charged in bruised boy's death

Allegations of child abuse apparently had been made against the mother in the past

A Harlem mother of a 6-year-old boy and her boyfriend are being accused of causing the death of the child who was brought to a Manhattan hospital with multiple bruises on his body, police said Wednesday.

Zymere Perkins had severe bruising to his head and body and died Monday at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital, investigators said.

Geraldine Perkins, 26, the boy’s mother, and her boyfriend, Rysheim Smith, 42, were each charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child, police said. The charges could eventually be upgraded pending the results of the investigation.

Perkins told police that Smith had beaten the child for defecating in an ice bucket, the Daily News reported. Area television news broadcasts showed investigators with a broomstick that they apparently seized as evidence.

Perkins has been accused of child abuse in the past, the Daily News reported.

There was no information available as to whether Perkins and Smith have obtained lawyers who could comment on their behalf about the charges.
