Summer Streets guide: Traffic closures, schedule, activities

The free event Summer Streets was created to encourage New Yorkers to get around the city without the use of cars and to provide space for families to engage in healthy activities. Seven miles of New York City streetswill be cleared of vehicles and open for everyone to enjoy hours of recreation.

This year’s Summer Streets event will be held on August 6, 13, and 20 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Top activities will include a ziplinepositioned on 53rd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue, and a300-foot water slide at Foley Square.

According to the New York City Police Department and Department of Transportation, there will be several street closures and traffic delays during the Summer Streets event.

The following streets will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Route street closures:

• Centre Street between Brooklyn Bridge exit and Reade Street / Lafayette Street
• Lafayette Street between Reade Street / Centre Street and Fourth Avenue
• Fourth Avenue between Lafayette Street and East 15th Street
• Union Square East between East 15th Street and East 17th Street
• Park Avenue South between East 17th Street and East 32nd Street
• Park Avenue between East 32nd Street and East 72nd Street
• (Including the viaduct between East 40th Street and East 46th Street)
• East 72nd Street between Park Avenue and 5th Avenue

Foley Square Rest Stop:

• Centre Street between Reade Street and Worth Street
• Foley Square Plaza
• Duane Street between Centre Street and Lafayette Street
• St Andrew’s Plaza (Behind DCAS)
• S/S of Reade Street between Lafayette Street and Elk Street

Soho Rest Stop:

• Cleveland Place between Kenmare Street and Spring Street
• Kenmare Street between Lafayette Street and Mulberry Street
• Broome Street between Lafayette Street and Crosby Street
• Spring Street between Lafayette Street and Mulberry Street
• Spring Street between Lafayette Street and Crosby Streets both sides
• Lafayette Street to middle of block

Astor Place Rest Stop:

• Astor Place between Broadway and Lafayette Street
• Astor Place Plaza
• S/S of 8th Street between Broadway and Lafayette Street

Midtown Rest Stop:

• 24th Street between Madison Avenue and Park Avenue
• 24th Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue
• 25th Street between Madison Avenue and Park Avenue
• 26th Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue
• 26th Street between Madison Avenue and Park Avenue
• Madison Avenue between 23rd Street and 25th Street

Pershing Square and East 40th Street:

• 40th Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue
• 41st Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue

Uptown Rest Stop:

• 51st Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue
• 51st Street between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue
• 52nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue
• 52nd Street between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue
• 53rd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue
• 53rd Street between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue
