TheNew York City Department of Design and Construction found two burial vaults below Washington Square Park earlier this week that could date back to the 19th century.

Construction on the water mains was suspended once the first burial vault was discovered on Tuesday, and the city medical examiner, Landmarks Preservation Commission and archeologists and anthropologists are examining the discovery. Construction will continue south of the burial site.
