Taste the new Filled Cupcake Oreo at Chelsea’s Wonder Vault

NYC’s food scene is at least half the hype of experiencing something before anyone else can. Today,that’s Oreo’s newest flavor, Filled Cupcake, which you can try a week before it’s on shelves.

The cookies are behind an Oreo-shaped vaultdoor at 245 W. 18th St. in Chelsea. Swing it open and pull a red lever, then watch as a snack-size pack of the new cookies slides downto you Willy Wonka-style.

The cookies accomplish what they say on the box.A Hostess cupcakehas been reinterpreted into chocolate frosting and vanilla cream, then squashedbetween two originalflavor Oreos.New Yorkers can try them at the vault until 6:30 p.m. today; everyone else will have to wait untilFeb. 8, when they hit shelves for$4.49.

Nabisco, which makes Oreos, just released another new flavor, Cinnamon Bun, late last month. Expect more limited edition flavors — the company says it has another50 or soat the prototype stage, with more ideas being developed constantly.Most flavors take between a year and 18 months to create, with monthly taste tests, though development can also take much longer.
