BAM’s festival of modern animation is turning 13. Rather than hitting its awkward phase, the annual event is stronger than ever with its celebration of 2-D cinema from around the world. Highlights of this year’s fest include “The Transformers: The Movie” in 35mm and the “Pink Panther” collection. ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’
The summer of “Star Trek” continues on the deck of the Intrepid tonight, when “Star Trek II” introduces newbies to the series to the first appearance of the fearsome ideologue Khan. The outdoor film is free, though weather permitting, and will be introduced by its director, Nicholas Meyer, who is also a writer on CBS’ upcoming “Star Trek” streaming series. You’ve still got time to Amazon Prime yourself a Super Soaker before this weekend’s watergun showdown in Central Park. Thousands of New Yorkers grab their water guns (no balloons allowed, BYO bucket for refills) for a sprawling battle on the Great Lawn. Spend the weekend as your more cultivated ancestors did: sprawled on a blanket in the park listening to poetry. The sixth annual fest brings together over 250 poets to share their works aloud across the lawns of Governors Island all weekend long. It’s free to attend, but if you RSVP you can win a custom tote filled with signed books from featured readers. Explore your city, take care of three square (or triangular) meals and become a pizza pro. Sounds like a perfect Saturday. Teams will meet at Washington Square Park and receive their list of pizza joints, one in each borough. They’ll then take off to see who can reach all five the fastest and chronicle their culinary adventure on social media, then collect their prizes at the after-party.
