It is rarely mentioned, but one of the obvious things that MLS desperately needs the most in order to take the next step in terms of popularity in the United States is to add more marketable players.

Paris Saint-Germain star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic seems like a perfect fit for the still growing league: he’s one of the best goal-scorers of his generation and he has the oversized personality to match. What’s more, his current contract in France is almost up; it runs through the end of this upcoming 2015-16 season.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, the 33-year-old Swedish captain noted that he hopes to one day compete full-time in the United States (he is here right now with PSG on a preseason tour of America).

“I would like to play in the U.S., absolutely,” he said.

Yahoo mentioned his most likely suitors in MLS which should all come as no surprise: Miami, Los Angeles and New York.

“I think that playing in MLS would be an amazing experience,” he said. “I see that soccer is growing a lot in the U.S. I was here 10 years ago and soccer was not on the level that it is today. I want it to be on the level of Europe, it will come here.”

Ibrahimovic has already played for many of the world’s top teams including Ajax (Netherlands), Juventus (Italy), Inter Milan (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain). In his long club career, the 6-foot-5 forward has scored 264 goals in 454 matches. For Sweden, he has 56 goals in 105 appearances.
