Newcomers get sworn in

Councillors Kerry Diotte and Dave Loken looked enthusiastic and determined yesterday, as they were officially sworn into office as the newest councillors at city hall.

They raised their left hands, joined their names to the roster and signed away their free time for at least the next couple of weeks as the city’s budget becomes the main focus for city council.

“It really hit home today and I felt kind of choked up as I looked down and saw my friends, it’s a proud moment,” said Diotte.

“The budget is going to be the first big challenge because a lot of people want a lot of things. We’ve got to get bang for the buck.”

Sitting at his new desk, it was easy to see the confidence in Loken as he adjusted to his surroundings.

“I’m very excited, very honoured and humbled. I’m looking forward to the many challenges ahead and I’m just going to try (to) enjoy this day because there’s going to be few and far between from here on in,” said Loken.

“Getting the budget going, that’s going to determine what we’re going to do for the next year.”
