The earnings gap between new immigrants to Vancouver and Canadian-born workers is wider now than it was 25 years ago, according to 2006 census data released yesterday.
In 1980, recent immigrants earned 85 cents for each dollar received by Canadian-born workers. By 2005, the ratio had dropped to 63 cents for men and 56 cents for women.
Median earnings fell 29.2 per cent among recent immigrant men who had a degree in computer sciences and 20 per cent among those with an engineering degree between 2000 and 2005.
In contrast, median earnings fell only 5.3 per cent among Canadian-born men with a computer sciences degree and rose slightly among those with a degree in engineering.
