10-year-old football fan will go Grey this weekend

A little help from above propelled one lucky Calgary child all the way to the Grey Cup game and he can’t wait to cheer.

Darrell Wood-Schmidtka, 10, a huge football fan, was selected by a local youth group to receive a pair of tickets to the sold-out game on Sunday.

“I prayed and prayed that I would get to go; I prayed 30 times a day, even more than to go to Disneyland,” he said.

The Stampeders fan is disappointed his favourite team isn’t playing but he said he would wear his jersey anyway and cheer for the Roughriders.

He even chose to bring his mom — because, he says, “she is nice”.

“I’m just so happy and excited for him,” his mother Andrea said.

Kids Up Front Foundation is a local charity that provides access to sports and entertainment events to children and youth who may not otherwise have the opportunity to go.

“He is such a great kid, he’s been working really hard and he is just so cute. He really deserves this,” executive director Kari Scarlett said.
