10-year-old saving lives

At just 10 years old, Cassidy Sauve is in the business of saving lives.

After her grandfather died from lung cancer four years ago, the Medicine Hat girl made a commitment to butting out tobacco across the province, and is starting to see some success.

Yesterday, Sauve and four other finalists received awards for their commitment to clearing the air at the Barb Tarbox Awards Of Excellence — appropriately held on World No Tobacco Day.

“You maybe think it’s just one cigarette and it’s not going to affect you, but you could get addicted and get lung cancer,” she said.

Sauve was so moved when her grandfather died that she wrote a story, which has been published in a new book called Let’s Clear the Air: 10 Reasons NOT to Start Smoking.

“Sometimes kids have more power than adults,” she said. “If kids are saying it, maybe it really will get the point across.”
