Nothing captures war or life at sea quite like a painting.

A travelling exhibit from the Canada War Museum in Ottawa opens Friday at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. It’s called The Navy: A Century in Art.

“There are portraits of the Battle of the Atlantic, conditions of life at sea, Canadian naval personnel involved in conflict, as well as representations of the home ports of the Canadian navy,” said Anne-Marie Raymond, spokeswoman for the Canada War Museum, who led media on a tour on Thursday.

There are about 10 paintings depicting Halifax scenes, including one painting that shows a busy Barrington Street during the Second World War.
