Niagara regional police and other law enforcement agencies executed 21 search warrants on Wednesday, arresting 12 people following a 10-month joint investigation.

Police say Project Takeout began in September 2009 after complaints from the public about drug trafficking at a Chinese restaurant in St. Catharines, Ont.

Investigators said Thursday they found ties to a Colombian cartel responsible for moving cocaine across three continents.

Police say a sophisticated drug distribution network extended from St. Catharines to Toronto with direct lines to Sherbrooke, Que., New York state, Amsterdam and Madrid, as well as to Colombia.
