Off-duty officer tackles teen

An hour-long stakeout at an east-end bank ended dramatically yesterday morning when police wrestled the teenage robber to the ground as he left the building with a backpack filled with a reported $150,000 in cash.

The 16-year-old robber apparently had no idea that two Emergency Task Force teams with 20 officers, a K9 unit and an armoured vehicle were outside, said Toronto police Const. Wendy Drummond.

The teen was tackled by an off-duty officer who happened to be inside the bank at the time of the robbery.

Police were called around 10:15 a.m. to the CIBC Bank, located in a strip mall on Lawrence Avenue East near Victoria Park Avenue.

The teen, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with robbery and forcible confinement. He was scheduled to appear in Toronto court this morning.
