3 slain in shooting on New Year’s Day

Three men are dead after a shooting at a southeast Calgary Vietnamese restaurant Thursday afternoon.

All three were eating at Bolsa Vietnamese Restaurant, located at Macleod Trail and 94 Street SE, when at least two gunmen open fire, according to police. Two of the victims were found inside the restaurant and one was outside, in the parking lot.

While police have confirmed that it was a targeted attack and not a random act of violence, they won’t say if the shooting was drug or gang related. Both homicide and gang units are investigating the case.

“It’s been a busy day. Hopefully, it’s not a sign of things to come,” said Calgary Police Service duty inspector Dean Lagrange of the holiday homicides.

“An officer’s job is tough at the best of times, but when you come home to your families, you appreciate them a little bit more.”

Police are getting help on this case from at least 10 witnesses who were eating in the restaurant. They are also asking nearby local businesses for any surveillance tapes that can help identify the shooters.

“I find this area usually to be very safe,” said Melanie Hamel, who works at the Regal Beagle in the same plaza as Bolsa. “I’ve never felt scared or threatened at my job.”
