4 Brazilian specialities to try out in Sao Paulo

If you’re going to Brazil, try these four specialties.

1 Barbecue: The specialty of Rio Grande do Sul state, in the southern region of Brazil, was invented more than three centuries ago. At a barbecue, or churrascaria, different cuts of beef are roasted over coals and carved at your table. Side dishes including rice, bread and salad are offered self-service.

2 Escondidinho: A typical dish from Pernambuco state, located in the northeast of Brazil, and from cities in the central state of Minas Gerais, escondidinho is prepared with shredded jerked meat and mashed yuca. Chefs use butter as a seasoning and top it off with browned curd cheese.

3 Moqueca de peixe: This Northeastern speciality is a thick stew of seasoned fish and seafood. Each region of the country gives its special taste to the dish: The traditional moqueca from the state of Bahia is prepared with coconut milk and palm oil.

4 Caipirinha
: The national cocktail is prepared with cachaca, Brazil’s answer to rum. Crush limes with sugar, then add ice and cachaca; stir, then pour into a frozen glass.
