5,300 undersized lobsters seized in bust

Fisheries officials have seized a record catch of 5,300 undersized lobsters in Yarmouth County.

At 11 p.m. Monday, fisheries officers boarded the Kayla & Dylan, a 13-metre fishing vessel out of Wedgeport. Field supervisor Dan Fleck said yesterday they found 35 crates of undersized lobsters aboard.

“People will try to sneak in a dozen, but a seizure of this quantity of lobsters has never, ever happened before. We’re all just amazed to think someone would try to attempt this,” Fleck said.

Lobsters must be bigger than 82.5 millimetres in order to be caught and sold. Otherwise, they don’t have a chance to reproduce, and to sell them is illegal. Three men will be in court July 15.
