5 arrested for $2.3M armoured car heist

Fancy cars, lavish vacations and expensive alcohol were some of the spoils allegedly enjoyed by five people from Toronto and Quebec who have been arrested for a multimillion-dollar armoured car heist in Richmond Hill.

The theft, which police are calling an inside job, happened Feb. 5 when two Garda armoured car guards stopped at an RBC branch to drop off and pick up money.

Police allege a Garda employee gave some of his relatives sensitive company information that allowed them to pull off the heist.

As two guards went into the bank, police say thieves were able to open the vehicle’s doors and make off with about $2.3 million.

Officers from York Regional Police announced yesterday they worked with the Sûreté du Québec on the case for nearly three months before arresting five people last Wednesday.

Investigators also seized cash, cars, a boat, jewelry and expensive alcohol.
