$50K set for at-risk youth

Local youth who face barriers to employment will get job preparation training and work experience through the Government of Canada’s support for an employment project.

Peter Goldring, member of Parliament for Edmonton East, made the announcement yesterday for the Edmonton City Centre Church Corporation (E4C) to receive more than $49,903 in federal Skills Link funding to provide outreach services to 125 youth in Edmonton who face significant barriers to employment.

“In my youth, it was very easy to move from job to job” Goldring said. “Today, that just isn’t possible.”

These services will help connect youth to community programs and services in order to assist them in identifying and addressing their employability and educational needs.

The most obvious beneficiary of the funding is the Kids in the Hall Bistro, located at city hall, which employs at-risk youth like Ryan McKinley and helps them learn skills in the service industry.

“I have work experience now that I didn’t have before,” said McKinley, 16 “When you come here, it’s different … Everybody’s (treated) the same.”
