Six prisoners were involved in an altercation in the back of a Nova Scotia sheriff’s van on Thursday. Department of Justice spokeswoman Jennifer Gavin said nine prisoners were being transported from the Dartmouth courthouse back to the Central Nova Correctional Facility. Three of the prisoners were in protective custody, and separated from the other six.

One of the prisoners was treated for injuries at the Burnside jail, and Gavin said no outside medical attention was required. Sheriff’s vans can hold up to 14 prisoners. Gavin said it was not unusual to transport that many prisoners at one time.
