70 acts added to arts festival

Legendary country-rocker Steve Earle headlines a list of 70 new acts added yesterday to the Cultural Olympiad, the arts and cultural festival that runs before and during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Other acts announced include a tribute to Neil Young, which features Broken Social Scene and a troupe of 22 Ugandan dancers and musicians who have been orphaned by war or AIDS.

“Culture, just like sport and the environment, is a pillar of the Olympic movement,” said John Furlong, VANOC’s executive director. “Through culture, it’s a way for the world to see us up close.”

Robert Kerr, program director for the Cultural Olympiad, said it now features more than 125 projects representing 600 free and paid performances at 60 venues in the Lower Mainland and Sea-to-Sky corridor.

More acts will be announced as the Games approach.
