A 30-year-old woman was shot and killed in Hollywood on the evening of July 5, police said.
Carrie Jean Melvin was pronounced dead at the scene by the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Melvin was walking on McCadden Place toward Sunset Boulevard with her companion when she was approached from behind and shot by a black male in what police said appears to be a random act of violence.
Her boyfriend was not injured.

The suspect then left northbound on McCadden Place in a black sedan, the LAPD reported.
Melvin was working to establish a career in the entertainment industry and had been living in LA for the past four years, KNBC-TV reported.
The case is still being investigated.
