A bridge too far for summer motorists

Jayne Erickson felt the wrath of traffic on her way to work last Sunday due to the MacKay Bridge closure.

“The fact that I can’t use the (MacKay) bridge to get to my place of work and back just tacks at least an extra 20 minutes onto my day,” said Erickson, who lives in Bedford.

“People are getting aggravated on the road, which is dangerous.”

Theresa Rath, public relations manager for the Halifax Regional Police, said there were several accidents on the Macdonald Bridge last weekend, which led to some of the congestion.

She advises drivers to “be patient and to slow down” when taking alternate routes during the bridge closure.

More delays

The delays aren’t done yet. Drivers can expect further delays in the coming weekends.

• July 23-26 The bridge will be reduced to two lanes, says Allison MacDonald of Halifax Harbour Bridges.

• Natal Day
MacDonald said the bridge will remain open for Natal Day.

• One more closure She says one additional weekend closure will be required, but dates have not been determined.
