With full stomachs, new hair cuts and a lot of information from health care to housing at hand, guests at the fifth Homeless Connect event were all smiles and in relaxation mode yesterday.
Lining up to get his teeth examined by volunteering dentists and assistants, Rob is hoping to get a fresh start after losing his construction job.
“This is great. I’m taking care of things,” he said. “I’m just looking for some other camp to get on.”
Part of a 10-year project funded by Homeward Trust Edmonton, a community based organization, Homeless Connect is one of the solutions to end homelessness in the city.
“There’s a lot of people here who are at risk of homelessness or just dealing with issues of poverty and crisis,” explained Susan Mcgee, executive director of Homeward Trust.
“They are here getting support to prevent them from becoming homeless.”
All of the services provided such as eye examinations, legal aid, and counselling are free. There were 450 volunteers on hand to help guests go through the services and more than 1,200 people attended.
