A helping hand for young moms looking for work

Young mothers facing the challenge of raising children, developing their job skills and finding meaningful employment now have a program that will allow them to get through any barriers they may encounter.

An new plan to help a group of 12 Ottawa mothers succeed as parents and employees was officially launched on Thursday by the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa and the Youville Centre.

The unveiling of the Young Parent Employment Program (YPEP) was held at the Youville Centre on Mann Avenue with Ottawa-West Nepean MP John Baird making the announcement.
“Our government is proud to invest $182,000 into this program and hope that it makes a huge impact in their lives,” Baird said.

The dozen women recently began a series of hands-on workshops and 16 weeks of on-the-job work experience with the goal of increasing their chances of supporting themselves and their families.

“Being involved in a program like this is an absolute blessing,” said Amanda, a program participant. “It is geared towards balancing the demands of parenthood and daycare while still being able to improve my job skills and find a great job.”
