A hub for active seniors

Hearthstone By the Bay sets out to prove that getting older doesn’t have to mean giving up the active lifestyle you love.

Located on a coveted waterfront location near Lakeshore Boulevard and Park Lawn Road at Etobicoke’s eastern edge, Hearthstone hopes to be a magnetic hub for seniors with discerning tastes who value convenience and location.

With luxuries like dog walking, airport pickup, walking trails and gourmet room service melded to a professionally-staffed on-site health and wellness centre, Hearthstone is clearly poised to attract socially engaged seniors who definitely want to stay active.

“The goal (with Hearthstone) was about creating a hybrid combining the maintenance-free living of your own condominium with access to health and wellness services as you require them,” said Renee Bourgon, director of sales and marketing for Davies Smith Developments, builder of Hearthstone.

Bourgon says the model suite, which features classic touches like crown moulding, valance lighting and rich wallpaper, is aimed at someone who enjoys classic luxury but also wants modern convenience and style. “There’s definitely more of a classic feel in the finishing touches than the modern white wall. It’s still modern, but not so modern that it feels cold,” Bourgon said.

Living areas are open-concept in design and each master bedroom features floor-to-ceiling windows with ensuite walk-in closet and bathroom.

Most important of all, all suites at Hearthstone are designed for full accessibility by seniors with mobility issues, particularly those using wheelchairs. All doors in each suite are extra-wide and have levered handles for easier opening, countertops and light switches are all slightly lowered to be accessible from a seated position and power outlets are raised to prevent bending over. Yet unlike many conspicuously “accessible” living spaces, Hearthstone designers worked hard to ensure the effect isn’t jarring for people with regular mobility. “We really wanted to create a home that was at the same time new and fresh and accessible but not have the accessibility factor be as noticeable,” Bourgon said.
