A necessary evil of summer

Construction season means slowed traffic and detours, but they’re necessary for the success of the city, said the city’s manager for asset management.

“We do have an aging infrastructure,” said Alain Gonthier. “It’s important … to maintain these services.

We realize it’s inconvenient, but it’s less convenient than if we have to react to a water main break.”

According to Gonthier, there are $650 million worth of projects going on this summer.
This creates jobs in all areas of construction, he added.

The projects are spread across the city, in part, to ease some of the congestion, he said.
