A taste of local at The Piggy Market

Local, seasonal, artisan, organic and sustainable are all buzz words inthe food community, and The Piggy Market lives and breathes this mantra.

Local, seasonal, artisan, organic and sustainable are all buzz words in the food community, and The Piggy Market lives and breathes this mantra. Just buying a hunk of bacon there means you're helping to keep local farmers viable.

The pulled pork sandwich I ordered was perfectly tender with a crunch from the toasted sub bun and sweet from the barbecue sauce. The heritage breed pork was so tender, partly from the way it was prepared, but also because the pig it came from lived a happy life away from a factory farm. The gamey blue cheese melted into the mix gave the sandwich an earthy, rich taste.

I also ordered the curried chicken and lentil soup ($5) that was lightly flavoured but full of fork-large chunks of chicken and more than enough lentils to make it hearty.

A tip during construction: park at Mountain Equipment Co-op and walk to this hard-to-get-to but worthwhile lunch spot.
