A victim of crime? Report it

“I want people reporting crime.”

That was the message coming from Calgary Police Commission chair Mike Shaikh in the aftermath of the Calgary Police Commission’s 2010 Citizen Survey.

Fourteen per cent of respondents in this year’s survey said they have been victims of crime in the past year.

However, only 74 per cent of those people said that they actually reported the crimes.

“We do have response systems for all crime that is reported,” said Shaikh.

But, he suggested that some people may feel as though they can’t be bothered to report the crime.

Shaikh said if more crimes were reported, police would have a more accurate view or the areas where policing can be improved.

“We need to focus on where Calgarians need us,” said Shaikh.
