Aboriginal protesters blockade landfill site

Protesters at a landfill site under construction in Simcoe County have taken their demonstration up a notch.

Native Canadian protesters have now blockaded the entrance to the landfill, known as Site 41 in the southern Georgian Bay region.

Anishinabe Kweag spokeswoman Vicki Monague says protesters allowed a security guard at the site to leave this morning before the blockade was set up.

The protesters say the blockade will stay until Ottawa becomes involved in the battle over whether the land will become a landfill.

The environmental services manager for Simcoe County, Rob McCullough, says excavation work continues to prepare the site to accept trash in the fall.

He says some workers are entering through a separate entrance.
