Accessible garden springs up

Vancouver’s first integrated accessible community garden has sprung up in Strathcona Park, with raised beds to allow people with mobility constraints to cultivate flowers and produce.

Jill Weiss, chair of the city’s subcommittee on accessible community gardens, said one woman is coming all the way from North Vancouver to use the garden.

“(There’s a feeling) of deep gratitude,” Weiss said. “They’re able finally to garden. There’s an 85-year-old woman here who hasn’t been able to in 20 years.”

The raised beds negate the need to crouch and each one has its own water tap.
