Cape Breton Regional Police say it appears a small fire killed a 78-year-old Sydney Mines man found dead inside his home by a relative around 5:30 p.m. Monday.

“It looks at this point like an accidental fire inside his home,” said Staff Sgt. Paul Muise, adding the victim was burned in the fire, which caused “minimal damage” to the kitchen and living room.

Nobody reported the fire, which was out when the grisly discovery was made. Muise said the relative was checking on the elderly man and added the victim may have died a day or two before the body was found.

Police say an autopsy will take place in Halifax.
